The smooth black surface on an electric or induction range is commonly called a glass cooktop, but the working surface is usually a ceramic-glass material engineered for temperature change. Some newer models add a proprietary coating. That distinction matters: Whirlpool’s standard ceramic-glass guidance permits its specified scraper, while its WipeClean guidance says a scraper may damage that coating.
Identify the exact top
Find the range or cooktop model number before buying a kit. Read the maintenance section and search the manufacturer’s support page for terms such as ceramic glass, glass ceramic, induction surface, coated glass, or WipeClean. Do not identify a coating by touch or shine. Two tops from the same brand can require different methods.
Confirm that the soil is on the cooking glass, not a plastic control panel, metal trim, silicone joint, downdraft grille, or display. Each adjacent material has its own instructions. If the surface is cracked, chipped, or broken, do not clean or operate it; turn the appliance off as directed and contact service.
Check compatibility on a cool surface
For ordinary dried residue, turn all controls off and wait for the model’s heat indicators to clear. Follow the manual’s cool-down rule. A sugary or melted-plastic spill can have a special time-sensitive warm-surface procedure, so consult the manual rather than waiting automatically or reaching toward heat.
When trying an approved cleaner for the first time, use a very small amount on a cool, inconspicuous corner of the cooking surface that the manual permits for cleaning. Keep it away from seams, controls, and vent openings. Use the specified pad with light pressure, remove the product exactly as directed, and inspect after the area is clean and dry. Stop for haze, altered gloss, rainbowing that was not present before, or a visible test boundary.
A spot test cannot make an unapproved product safe, and it cannot evaluate how a chemical behaves when heated. Product approval still comes first.
Routine care
Remove loose crumbs from the fully cooled top with a soft cloth. For a standard ceramic-glass model, use the maker-approved cooktop cleaner and pad in the stated amount. Whirlpool’s general method directs owners to polish dried cleaner away with a clean, dry cloth or paper towel. Other brands may specify a damp follow-up, so use the exact sequence in the manual.
A purpose-built cooktop scraper is only safe when the exact model instructions allow it. Use the documented angle, temperature, hand protection, and storage procedure. Never substitute a utility knife, loose razor, metal spatula, or glass scraper from another task. Do not scrape over markings, edges, or a proprietary coating.
For a WipeClean-style Whirlpool surface, the manufacturer’s routine instead begins with a cooled top, water soaking, a soft nonabrasive sponge, and drying; it specifically discourages a scraper. This is why “glass cooktop” alone is not enough identification.
What to avoid
Whirlpool excludes steel wool, abrasive powder cleaners, chlorine bleach, rust remover, and ammonia from its standard ceramic-glass guidance. Its coated-top page also excludes coarse pads and glass window cleaners. Use the exclusions in your own manual, which may be longer.
Do not slide cookware, use the top as a cutting board, drop jars from storage above, or leave grit beneath a pan. Keep cookware bottoms clean and dry. Do not place a hot lid flat on a cooling surface; Whirlpool warns trapped air can contribute to breakage on covered models.
Never mix cleaners or spray liquid toward controls or a frame opening. Avoid cleaning while a heating zone is energized, except for a narrowly defined warm-spill procedure in the manual.
When to stop
Stop for a crack, chip, impact point, electrical fault, control error, or cleaner beneath an edge or control. Do not operate the appliance until the manufacturer or a qualified technician evaluates structural damage. Scratches, metal transfer, pitting, and permanent discoloration are different conditions; repeated scraping cannot diagnose them.
If one approved cycle does not improve a mark, photograph it in cool daylight and contact the maker. Cleaning removes compatible residue. It cannot reverse glass pitting, restore a removed coating, or repair a crack.
Maintenance baseline
Check the cooled surface after each use and remove ordinary soil before the next heating cycle. Clean pan bottoms at the same time so residue is not reheated between the two surfaces. Store the model-approved cleaner and any approved scraper together with the manual, out of children’s reach. Recheck instructions after replacing the appliance; the old kit may not suit the new top.
