Fabric Upholstery

Fabric upholstery is a system rather than a single exposed fiber. A face textile may be backed, laminated, coated, glued, sewn with a contrasting thread, stretched over foam, or fixed to a wood or metal frame. A compatibility decision must account for every layer a product, tool, or drying method can reach. Appearance and touch cannot establish that decision.

Build a material record

Look beneath loose cushions, under the deck, and on the furniture base for a label. Pair it with the invoice, product page, swatch card, and warranty. Record the maker, model, collection, fabric name, fiber statement, cleaning code, protective treatment, cushion construction, and any product exclusions. Photograph the label before it fades, but keep the written record because a picture alone may not reveal a revised care bulletin.

Separate confirmed facts from guesses. A velvet appearance does not identify the fiber; a performance-fabric name does not automatically permit extraction; and a zipper may exist only for factory assembly. Leather, faux leather, suede, outdoor textile, antique fabric, and a slipcover sold as a separately washable item need their own documentation. Read the cleaning code as a boundary

Ashley’s current care page describes commonly used codes, but the furniture maker’s label remains controlling.

Code	Broad meaning	What the code does not decide
W	A maker-approved water-based upholstery shampoo or foam category may be allowed.	The product, dilution, amount, extraction method, and drying setup.
S	Water is excluded and a dry-cleaning solvent category is indicated.	Which solvent is compatible or whether consumer application is safe. Treat this as a professional-care boundary.
SW/WS	One compatible option from either listed category may be allowed.	Permission to mix categories, alternate products, or use both in one attempt.
X	Owner care is generally limited to vacuuming or light brushing.	A hidden liquid method; the code does not authorize one.
Missing or unreadable	Compatibility is unconfirmed.	Permission to infer a code from a similar sofa or online chart.

A code is not a recipe. Manufacturer wording may also exclude steam, powered extraction, cover removal, disinfectant, stain protector, or home solvent use.

Map the whole construction

Before choosing a method, note what lies below and beside the face fabric. Check whether liquid can reach a backing, adhesive, contrasting welt, button, zipper tape, foam, down blend, batting, wood rail, or metal mechanism. Identify loose seams, sun-faded areas, old rings, previous protector, and repairs. These details explain why a product compatible with the visible fiber can still alter the assembled furniture.

Classify each proposed method by the documentation it needs:

Vacuum or light brush	The code permits it, and the attachment and suction will not pull pile, thread, or trim.
Water-based product	A W, SW, or WS boundary plus maker approval for the exact product type and application.
Solvent product	Product-specific manufacturer or professional direction, with exposure, ignition, and disposal controls.
Steam or extraction	Express approval for the machine, heat, moisture volume, and drying conditions.
Cover laundering	A sewn label that identifies that exact cover as removable and washable, including cycle and drying limits.
Disinfectant or protector	A label covering the exact textile and complete construction, without conflict with the furniture warranty.

Never combine products to expand what one code permits.

Use a spot test as a compatibility gate

A hidden test answers a narrow question: whether one documented product and method produces an observable change on one matching area. It does not prove universal colorfastness or authorize more liquid elsewhere. Record the product, dilution, application material, test location, start time, and fully dry result.

Compare color, dye transfer, sheen, pile direction, stiffness, tack, odor, ring formation, seam shape, and backing visibility only after complete drying. Any persistent change closes that option. Do not use a second chemical to correct a failed test.

Classify the condition before assigning a task

An intact, labeled textile with ordinary dry soil can remain within documented owner care. Dye transfer, delamination, exposed filling, open seams, brittle backing, spreading moisture, an old unknown treatment, or contamination that reached the cushion changes the case. Paint, fuel, smoke, floodwater, significant bodily fluid, and a valuable or antique piece require material-appropriate professional assessment rather than a stronger household formula.

Keep the record current

Review the record after reupholstery, professional cleaning, protector application, warranty service, or replacement of a cushion cover. Keep the product name and professional invoice with the care code. If the maker revises its bulletin, retain the version associated with the furniture and note the date you checked the current page.
