How to Clean a Faucet Aerator When the Stream Turns Uneven

A parts-aware method for clearing sediment and mineral deposits without crushing the aerator, losing its internal stack, or damaging the faucet finish.

When a faucet stream splits, sprays sideways, or becomes noticeably weaker, sediment at the aerator is one plausible cause. It is not the only cause: a partly closed supply valve, kinked hose, clogged cartridge, damaged flow regulator, or building-pressure problem can look similar. Identify the aerator before removal

This method fits a faucet with a removable threaded aerator or a recessed aerator that has a manufacturer-supplied key. Find the model number and parts diagram first. Some rectangular, integrated, and pull-down spray aerators are not intended to be removed by the user.

Look underneath the spout. A conventional aerator has an outer shell you may be able to turn by hand. A cache aerator sits inside the spout and usually needs a matching plastic key. If you cannot identify the design, pause and contact the manufacturer. Pliers applied to the wrong part can deform the aerator into an oval, scratch the finish, or break an internal connection.

Supplies and chemical boundaries

  • The correct aerator key, if specified
  • A soft cloth
  • A shallow bowl or tray
  • A soft toothbrush used only for cleaning
  • Clean water
  • White vinegar only when the faucet maker permits it for the removable parts
  • Replacement gasket or aerator if inspection shows damage

Delta’s public guidance permits vinegar soaking for aerator mineral deposits on covered products. That is not permission for every faucet finish or rubber component. Follow your model’s instructions and keep acid off the visible faucet body unless its maker approves contact.

Use no bleach in this procedure. Never mix bleach with vinegar, another acid, ammonia, or any cleaner. Do not add detergent to the vinegar bath, and do not reuse a container that may hold chemical residue.

Spot-test the planned cleaner

If visible trim might contact a solution, test a drop on a hidden, manufacturer-approved area. Rinse and blot it dry after the permitted contact time. Stop if the finish changes color, loses gloss, or develops a dark edge.

For removable plastic and metal parts, test the shortest contact time on the outer aerator shell if the manual does not give a duration. If the maker does not authorize vinegar for that part, use clean water and gentle brushing or request its recommended cleaner.

Remove and clean the aerator

  1. Close the faucet and protect the drain. Set the handle to off. Put a towel or stopper over the drain so a screen or gasket cannot disappear.
  2. Prepare for the part order. Place the tray beside the sink. Take a clear reference photo before and during disassembly so every screen and washer returns in the correct orientation.
  3. Unscrew without crushing. Try clean, dry hands first on a conventional aerator, turning counterclockwise as viewed from below. For a recessed design, seat the correct key fully. If the manual permits pliers, wrap the finish with a cloth and use only enough pressure to turn; stop if the shell deforms.
  4. Inspect the stack. Set components in order. Look for grit, torn screens, a flattened gasket, cracked plastic, or green corrosion. Damaged pieces should be replaced with model-correct parts.
  5. Rinse loose sediment. Run clean water over the parts in the bowl or another sink so nothing is lost down the drain. Brush gently from both sides.
  6. Treat permitted mineral deposits. When the faucet maker authorizes it, soak the removable aerator parts in plain white vinegar for the specified time. Delta’s general guidance allows an overnight soak for covered aerators, but shorter model-specific instructions take priority. Brush softened deposits gently.
  7. Rinse thoroughly. Flush every part with clean water until no vinegar odor remains. Do not combine it with a disinfectant.
  8. Reassemble by hand. Restore the photographed order and seat the gasket flat. Thread the aerator clockwise by hand to avoid cross-threading. Hand-tighten unless the manual provides a torque or tool step.
  9. Test gradually. Open the faucet at low flow, check the stream, then inspect the aerator joint for leakage.

When to stop

Stop if the aerator will not turn with the approved tool, the spout twists, the finish begins to mark, or a hidden aerator crumbles. A seized part is cheaper to resolve with manufacturer advice than with a damaged spout.

If flow remains weak with the aerator removed, the restriction is elsewhere. Do not probe the faucet with wire or dismantle valves unless the manual directs a user-serviceable procedure. If only hot or only cold flow is affected, or if pipes bang or leak, arrange qualified diagnosis.

Maintenance rhythm

Clean the aerator when the stream changes or visible debris appears. In hard-water areas, inspect it every three to six months initially and adjust based on actual buildup. After local water-main work, sediment may appear sooner. Regularly wiping the outlet dry can reduce deposits on the visible rim.

FAQ

Do I need to shut the valves under the sink?

Not for a simple removable aerator when the faucet handle stays securely off, unless the faucet manual says otherwise. Shutoffs are necessary before work on cartridges, supplies, or internal valves.

Can I poke the screen holes with a needle?

Avoid it. A hard point can enlarge holes, tear mesh, or change the regulated flow. Use water and a soft brush, then replace a damaged screen.

Why does the joint leak after reassembly?

The gasket may be missing, upside down, pinched, or worn, or the shell may be cross-threaded. Turn the faucet off, remove the aerator, and compare the stack with the parts diagram. Do not solve it by overtightening.
